You have picked out your wedding dress and rings, your reception site and catering. Now, it is time to plan the music for your wedding ceremony. There is such diversity in music that is presented to brides and grooms that selecting the music for your wedding might be difficult.

Many issues will affect your choice of music for your wedding ceremony and reception. How large a group will you be attending? Do you want a large or small band? Most wedding audiences will include guests whose ages span from teenagers to grandparents. How can you be sure that your friends and your relatives will all rave to you about your band or DJ?

Consider answering the following questions:

When you are celebrating, what type of music do you prefer the most?

Will you guests enjoy this same type of music, if not what do they enjoy?

If there is a vast difference in the taste of music, a compromise may be necessary so that everyone can enjoy the music.

Would you rather have live music or a DJ?

Does your budget support a live band?

If you are choosing a live band, check their references.

Does the band have a mixed genre of music? Request a list of songs they play so that you can choose the ones you would like for your wedding.

Ask for a demo CD if they have one that way you can take your time listening to see if this is what you really want.

Try to see one of their performances, if possible.

Communication with the band is important, if you are not comfortable telling them what you want and do not want it is time to consider a different option.

 Bit of History
A woman drew her long black hair out tight
And fiddled whisper music on those strings
And bats with baby faces in the violet light
Whistled, and beat their wings
And crawled head downward down a blackened wall....

How long are their sessions, and how many breaks will they take?

Do they have insurance? They should at lest have liability insurance. How many breaks will be taken?

When the band breaks, what type of music will be played, live, or taped?

What are the lengths of the dance sets?

Remember, the band or DJ is there to make your wedding and reception fun. You hire them to play the music you like; they are there to make your day the best in your life.

Consider booking your wedding band or DJ the same time you reserve your wedding reception venue. The reason for this is that your reception music will depend on your wedding venue. If you are considering live music, the venue where you are having your wedding and reception may have some rules that need to be followed. It is better to find out about these before the day of your wedding.

If you decide to enjoy a wedding band, consider booking them early. Are you considering a popular band? If so, they are often booked more than one year in advance. Weekends, especially Saturday are especially busy for wedding bands. Your budget may support a DJ instead of a wedding band since they are less expensive. An experienced DJ can produce a great environment for your wedding and reception. When you receive the answers to your list of questions they should all be part of the written contract, it is foolish not to get a written contract for this special event. Include in the contract the exact time the band starts and stops playing.

When the selection of your wedding music has been completed, remember to place performers or DJ, away from the tables with food and beverages. Make certain there is enough room so that your guests will have room to mingle and dance. If they are indoors, it is important that the musicians can see their music. Dim lighting is romantic but he musicians need to see their music. In addition, musicians should not be placed near heating or fireplaces (if they will be used) and there needs to be enough room for their instruments (low ceilings).

Whether you choose an electrifying dance band with male and female performers and instrumentals, an elegant smaller band, or a DJ, try to see the entertainers perform so you can get an idea of the energy they will bring to your wedding and reception. Most importantly, have fun finding the music for your special day and planning for the most exciting day of your life!
